물병자리!

아름다운 미소년 가니메데(Ganimede)가 물병에서 물을 따르고 있는 모습의 별자리이다. 가니메데는 트로이의 왕자였으나 신에게 술을 나르던 청춘의 여신 헤베(Hebe)가 발목을 다친 후 그녀의 역할을 대신하기 위해 독수리에게 납치당해 올림푸스 산에서 살게 되었다고 한다. 물병자리라고 부르고 있으나 정확한 이름은 ‘물을 나르고 있는 사람’이다. 물병자리는 황도 위의 11번째 별자리로 태양은 해마다 2월 중순에서 3월 중순 사이에 이 별자리를 지나간다.

찾는 법

가을철의 대표적인 길잡이인 페가수스자리의 바로 남쪽에 있는 커다란 별자리이나 뚜렷한 특징이 없다. 이 별자리를 찾는 가장 빠른 방법은 페가수스의 머리 아래에서 Y자 형태로 된 4등성의 물병을 찾는 것이다. 물병 서쪽으로 보이는 두 개의 3등성은 가니메데의 어깨에 해당한다. 그러나 별들이 놓인 모양만으로는 물병 외에 사람의 모습을 상상하기는 무척 힘들다.

물병을 나타내는 Y자 모양의 별무리 가운데 있는 4등급의 백색 이중성이다. 두 별의 각거리가 2.1˝로 매우 근접해 있어서 최소한 75mm이상의 고배율 망원경으로 보아야 한다.

M 73(NGC 6994)

M 72의 동쪽 1.5˚ 되는 곳에서 약간 남쪽에 보이는 삼각형 모양의 세 별로 사진 속에서는 4개로 보인다. 그러나 M 73은 실질적인 성단은 아니다.

구상성단

M 2(NGC 7089)

베타(β)별 북쪽에 있는 6등급 성단으로 주변에 밝은 별이 없어서 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 쌍안경으로도 쉽게 찾을 수 있으며 희미한 성운 모습으로 보인다. 200mm 이상의 망원경으로는 하나하나의 별을 구별할 수 있다.

M 72(NGC 6981)
20h 53.5m -12˚ 32´ 9.35등급 5.9´
서쪽 아래에 있으며 9등급 구상성단으로 특별히 주목을 끄는 대상은 아니다. 그러나 작은 망원경으로도 관측할 수 있고 크기가 작아서 오히려 쉽게 발견할 수 있다.

행성상성운

NGC 7009(Saturn Nebula)

뉴(ν)별 서쪽 1˚ 쯤에 보이는 8등급 성운으로 작은 망원경으로 보면 작은 녹색 원반처럼 보인다. 이 성운은 대형 망원경으로 찍은 사진 속에서 토성과 비슷한 모양으로 보여서 ‘토성성운(Saturn Nebula)’이란 이름이 붙었다. 150mm 정도 망원경으로 70배 이상의 배율이면 귀가 달린 원반 모양을 볼 수 있다.

NGC 7293(Helix Nebula)

엡실론(ε)별 서쪽에 보이며 우리에게 가장 가까이 있는 행성상성운으로 지구에서 약 600광년 떨어져 있다. 또한 이 성운은 겉보기 크기가 보름달의 절반쯤으로 행성상성운 중에서 매우 큰 편에 속한다. 비록 큰 공간에 퍼져 있어서 희미하게 보이지만 쌍안경이나 저배율의 망원경으로는 둥근 성운 모습을 분명히 확인할 수 있다. 이 성운의 아름다움은 사진에서 잘 나타나는데 사진에서는 두 개의 겹친 가스 고리를 볼 수 있다. 이러한 모습으로 이 성운은 ‘쌍가락지성운’ 혹은 ‘나선성운(Helix Nebula)’으로 불린다.

유성우

물병자리에서는 해마다 네 번의 유성우가 나타난다. 가장 큰 유성우는 물병자리에타유성군(η Aquarids)으로 극대점에 이르는 5월 6일경에는 시간마다 35개쯤의 유성이 나타난다. 물병자리델타유성군(δ Aquarids)은 7월 29일을 전후해서 시간마다 약 20개의 유성이 나타난다. 이 유성군은 8월 7일에도 한 번 더 나타나는데 이 때는 한 시간에 10개 정도의 유성이 떨어진다. 그리고 8월 6일에는 물병자리요타유성군(ιAquarids)이 나타나는데 시간마다 8개의 유성이 떨어진다.
